Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Tender cabbage leaves enveloping a savory filling of seasoned minced meat, nestled in a bed of tangy tomato sauce. Can you almost taste the hearty goodness? Stuffed cabbage rolls, also known as cabbage rolls or golabki in Polish cuisine, are a beloved comfort food with a nutritious twist. They’re not only delicious but also packed with wholesome ingredients that will leave you feeling satisfied and nourished.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • Optional: shredded cheese for topping

Serving Size: 4-6 servings
Cook Time Duration: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Let’s Get Cooking!

  1. Prep the Cabbage Leaves: Start by bringing a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head and place it in the boiling water. Allow it to boil for about 5-7 minutes, until the outer leaves are softened and can be easily peeled off. Remove the cabbage from the water and let it cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Filling: While the cabbage is cooling, let’s prepare the filling. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped onion until translucent, then add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet and cook until browned and no longer pink. Season with salt, pepper, dried oregano, and dried basil. Stir in the cooked rice and mix well. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Roll ‘Em Up: Carefully peel off the softened cabbage leaves, being mindful not to tear them. Place a spoonful of the meat and rice filling onto each cabbage leaf, then roll them up tightly, tucking in the sides as you go. Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in a large baking dish.
  4. Make the Tomato Sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and beef or vegetable broth. Season with salt, pepper, dried oregano, and dried basil. Pour the tomato sauce mixture over the cabbage rolls, making sure they’re fully covered.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the cabbage rolls are tender and the sauce is bubbling.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Once the cabbage rolls are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. You can sprinkle some shredded cheese on top for an extra indulgent touch if desired. Serve hot and enjoy the delicious flavors of this wholesome dish!
